Semiconductor Technology at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University

Program Introduction

Awards are available to pursue a full-time Master’s degree in Semiconductor Technology at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU). The program is taught in English.

The International College of Semiconductor Technology (ICST) was founded as the first of its kind in 2015 to nurture cross-disciplinary talents with global mobility for the semiconductor industry. NYCU is renowned for seeding the development of semiconductor technology in Taiwan which is essential for the success of its modern IC industry. Located in the main campus near Hsinchu city and serving as the hub of research activities related to semiconductor technology in NYCU, the ICST encourages multidisciplinary collaborations with academic departments across NYCU as well as the industries nationwide, particularly those located in the Hsinchu Science-Based Industrial Park.

ICST is nurtured as per the guidance of the Taiwan government and industrial elites, along with teaching excellence and research capability from the College of Electrical and Computer Science as a foundation. Building on the basis of electrical engineering, material science, and mechanical engineering, the curriculum is spread over the College of Electronic Engineering, the College of Engineering (Department of Material Science and Mechanical Engineering) and the College of Science (Department of Electro-physics and Applied Chemistry). The vertical cross-disciplinary professions combined through the colleges come together in ICST to nourish international industrial elites in the semiconductor field.

ICST aims to “lead the industry with academic development, making Taiwan a leader in international semiconductor technology and guiding Taiwan to establish a key position in the emerging technology industry.” The ultimate goal is to shape NYCU as a “Great University” where innovation is nurtured. ICST is well-positioned to be a progressive, world-class semiconductor research and development center and a new cradle for cultivating international semiconductor technology talents.

The award is co-sponsored by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.

School Introduction

National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University was created in 2021 through the merger of two universities: National Yang-Ming University and National Chiao Tung University.

Yang Ming, which focused on biomedical research, and Chiao Tung, which focused on electronic communication research, were both top-tier universities in Taiwan. At present, there are 19 colleges and 74 university/college-level research centers, with 1,400 faculty members and 19,637 students. Faculties include: artificial intelligence and green energy, biological science and technology, computer science, dentistry, humanity and social science, Hakka studies, law, life sciences, medicine, nursing, management, and general education.

City Overview

Location

Hsinchu City is located in northwestern Taiwan. In 1980, the Taiwanese government established the Hsinchu Science Park, an industrial center for semiconductor manufacturing. The infrastructure in Hsinchu is rapidly developing, featuring the establishment of major department stores, cultural centers, shopping malls, hotels, parks, and leisure areas.

Population

457,040 (2024)

Weather

Hsinchu’s climate is humid subtropical. Because Hsinchu is where the northern monsoon blows strongest during the autumn and winter seasons, it is also known as the Windy City. The city experiences hot and humid weather from June to September, while the period from October to December is considered the most pleasant time of the year. Temperatures are highest in July, with an average of 29°C (84.2ºF), and coldest in January, with an average of 15.5°C (59.9ºF).

Critical Language Enhancement Award

The Critical Language Enhancement Award (CLEA) provides an opportunity for Fulbright U.S. Student Program grantees to receive intensive language study in addition to their research/study grants. The award provides tuition reimbursement for grantees to pursue language training in the host countries.

Application for CLEA is made in conjunction with the Fulbright U.S. Student application. However, being awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student grant does not guarantee receipt of CLEA since review of each award is conducted separately and is contingent upon several factors. In Taiwan, only degree-seeking students pursuing Master’s studies will be eligible for CLEA. For additional information and requirements on the award, please see Critical Language Enhancement Award details.

Acceptable Languages

Mandarin

Prior Language Study

Prior language study is not required.

Dates and Timing

16 weeks, concurrent with academic studies during the first semester. CLEA recipients will be expected to arrive by the end of August to begin intensive language studies with one-on-one teaching arranged by the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (Fulbright Taiwan). CLEA language classes will take place through an exclusive, close partnership with FSE-approved Mandarin educators. All instructors are well-trained in TCSL pedagogy, and they offer all levels of language instruction from beginner to advance.

Note: Please find Fulbright grant benefits at Fulbright Taiwan, and submit the Fulbright application via IIE system by October 8, 2024.
