Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University

Program Introduction

This award is available to pursue a full-time master’s degree program in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). The program is taught in Mandarin.

Established in 1995, NTNU is the first university offering TCSL degree program in Taiwan. Alongside the Mandarin Training Center, which has alumni who are national leaders in multiple countries, the TCSL department of NTNU prides itself in being the largest and the most renowned Chinese-teaching and Mandarin-learning institute in Taiwan. The student body consists of Taiwanese, overseas Chinese, and international students from all over the world, creating an ecologically diverse learning environment. As a combination of academic research center and Mandarin teacher cultivation institute, the TCSL department aims to provide students with the most professional instruction and the best international resources. The faculty specializes in:

  • Chinese linguistics
  • Language education and pedagogy
  • Educational psychology
  • Cognitive science
  • Technology for education
  • Chinese literature and culture
  • Migration and overseas Chinese society

In addition to the above, the department also features cross-disciplinary programs such as the Program of International Baccalaureate (IB) Educator Certificate and Online Master’s Program for Chinese Teachers Abroad.

The Fulbright student will be able to do their teaching practice (1) assistantship in English education projects, and (2) internship in teaching Chinese as a Second Language. NTNU provides students with various internship opportunities, including teaching and administrative internships within the “Excellent Mandarin Language Program” which includes partnerships with 21 American universities, online or overseas teaching internship supervised by the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) in nations which have diplomatic relations with Taiwan, internships in overseas Mandarin teaching facilities, etc. Students may apply for different jobs according to their needs to fulfill the internship requirement.

The award is co-sponsored by the National Taiwan Normal University. The program will take 3 years to earn a master’s degree. International students spend their first year in studying Chinese in order to improve their Chinese language and study skills to the level needed for the program study. After completing a Chinese language program, international students will continue their studies toward their master’s degree. NTNU offers full tuition waivers and student dormitory as long as the candidate maintains satisfactory academic standards.

Taipei has a humid subtropical climate, hot summers and mild winters. The average temperature in summer ranges from 27°C to 33°C (80°F to 91°F), while winter temperatures typically fall between 15°C and 20°C (59°F to 68°F). Summers are hot and humid with occasional rainstorms and typhoons, while winters are short, generally warm, and often foggy.

The applicant’s Chinese proficiency of CEFR B1 or its equivalent is required. Advanced Mandarin study in Taiwan in the first year is required. CEFR B2 is expected at the beginning of the second year.
